INTRODUCTION
Nutrients are essential to the viability of all cells, including those in bone. However, it is the whole diet rather than individual nutrients that determines many factors that influence bone, including nutrition adequacy of all essential nutrients, the presence or absence of inhibitors to absorption and utilization of individual nutrients, the energy available for growth and maintenance of bone and adiposity, and acid–base balance. Diet and some lifestyle choices around the world lead to shortages of some nutrients that are particularly important to bone (ie, calcium, protein, and vitamin D). Our ability to accurately link and quantify the role of individual nutrients or whole diet in building and maintaining bone is handicapped by methodological limitations in assessing dietary intakes and the time lag for seeing consequences of diet on bone. Nutrition is an important component for treating those with osteoporosis as addressed elsewhere in this book. Diet, including dietary supplements, may be the most important complement to drugs for combination therapy. However, the more important role of diet is preventive. The cumulative effect of diet over the life span influences development of peak bone mass and its subsequent maintenance. Osteoporosis has been called a pediatric disorder because adult peak bone mass is largely determined during childhood.
